Healthy Living: Walhburger's BBQ Bacon Burger Made Healthy via Hungry Girl

Confession: I love Lisa Lillien of Hungry Girl. Her recipes are always delicious and the ingredients are easy to find! No hunting around high-priced grocery stores! What a relief! Check out her site - you won't be disappointed! Anyways, I recently watched a few episodes of the show Walhburger's (featuring the famous Walhberg brothers for those of you who didn't know they had a show... or a restaurant!) and I desperately wanted to try one of their items! But, living in Alabama and their restaurant being in Boston posed a problem! Enter Lisa Lillien and her healthy version of Donnie's favorite burger - the BBQ Bacon Burger. The original recipe she used can be found here.

My husband and I changed it up just a tad, but our calorie count came out to about the same as hers (Hers was 347, ours was 345.3!). So here's how we made it:

Makes 2 servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices center-cut bacon (tear bacon slices in half when placing on the burgers)

  • 8 oz extra-lean ground turkey (you can use beef, which is what Hungry Girl recommended, but the turkey was just as tasty!)

  • 2 tbsp. liquid egg whites

  • Salt and pepper

  • Onion powder

  • 2 light hamburger buns (ours were from Healthy Life - Dieter's Dream - 99% Fat Free Wheat Special Buns at 80 calories. Try to find one similiar - we found ours at Wal-Mart and have purchased them from Publix before as well!)

  • 2 wedges of The Laughing Cow Creamy White Cheddar Cheese (AMAZING!)

  • 2 tbsp. BBQ sauce (We used Stubbs Original, which comes in at 30 calories for 2 tbsps)

  • 8 slices jalapeno pepper

  • 2 oz. sliced avocado (The original version calls for 1/2 oz per burger, but we like extra avocado, and with calorie savings elsewhere, we were able to use extra!)

Directions

  1. Cook your bacon according to directions and set aside.

  2. Mix your ground turkey, egg whites, salt, pepper and onion powder (use as much seasoning as you would like) and make two patties about 4 inches wide.

  3. Use your outdoor grill to cook up the burgers (that's how we did it because the husband loves to grill!) or use a skillet sprayed with nonstick spray and cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side.

  4. Lightly toast the buns and then spread a wedge of the white cheddar cheese on the top half of each bun.

  5. Lay the patties on the bottom half of the bun and then top with 1 tablespoon BBQ sauce on each patty, the jalapeno slices, 1 oz avocado slices and the bacon halves. Add the top bun and voila! You have a healthier version of Wahlburger's BBQ Bacon Burger!

I gurantee you that your LEO will love this!! Mine sure did! And I enjoyed it just as much!! Don't forget to check out the Hungry Girl website and her original recipe. I only made adjustments as far as the meat type, BBQ sauce (mine was lower cal) and the amount of avocado per burger!
